Lotus Emeya electric 'hyper-GT' unveiling on September 7th
【Summary】Lotus will be revealing its new electric super-saloon, named the Emeya, on 7 September. The Emeya is referred to as a hyper-GT and will offer power and performance comparable to supercars. It will be the brand's first performance saloon in decades and is expected to be popular in China and the US. The Emeya will be similar in size to the Polestar 5 but will have distinct design and technological differences.
Lotus has officially announced that its highly anticipated electric super-saloon will be called the Emeya. The car, previously known as Type 133, was mistakenly linked to the Envya nameplate at one point. A new video preview of the Emeya reveals some of its key features, including a wraparound LED rear light bar, a movable rear wing, and distinctive LED headlights similar to the Lotus Eletre SUV.
The Emeya is referred to by Lotus as a hyper-GT, just like the Eletre is called the world's first hyper-SUV. This indicates that the Emeya will offer impressive power and performance, comparable to some of the fastest supercars on the market, rather than traditional combustion engine saloons. It will be Lotus' first performance saloon since the Vauxhall-based Carlton in the early 1990s, and it is expected to be particularly popular in China and the US, which are crucial markets for the brand. Lotus has stated that the Emeya will be its most luxurious car to date.
The confirmation of the Emeya's name follows the sighting of prototypes on the road, disguised in promotional camouflage livery. Late prototypes have already been produced at the Lotus Technology production line in Wuhan, China. In terms of size, the Emeya will be similar to the Polestar 5 grand tourer, which is set to be released next year. However, Lotus managing director Matt Windle has emphasized that there will be significant differences between the two models, as Geely, the parent company of both Lotus and Polestar, allows each brand to develop independently.
Spy shots of the Emeya reveal its sleek styling, sloping roof, and design cues borrowed from the Evija and Eletre. Lotus has placed great importance on the dynamic development of the Emeya, as it will directly compete with the Porsche Taycan and Audi E-tron GT. The car will feature similar chassis technology to the Eletre, including air suspension, rear-wheel steering, active roll control, and active aerodynamics, but it will be engineered to meet different requirements.
