Mercedes E-Class Estate debuts before BMW 5 Series Touring

The latest version of the Mercedes E-Class Estate has recently been released in the UK, with prices starting at £57,930 on-the-road. The E-Class wagon builds on the strengths of the E-Class saloon, offering additional space and practicality. The boot capacity stands at 615 litres, or 1,830 litres with the rear seats folded. However, in the plug-in hybrid version, the figures drop to 460 litres and 1,675 litres due to the extra hardware on board.

There are three powertrain options available initially - one petrol, one diesel, and one plug-in hybrid. Buyers also have the choice between five different trim levels. The entry-level engine is the E 200, which features a turbocharged 2.0-litre petrol engine with 201bhp. The diesel option is the E 220 d, equipped with a 194bhp 2.0-litre turbodiesel. Both powertrains are supplemented by a mild hybrid system that provides an extra 23bhp, resulting in fuel economy figures of 42.2mpg and 56.5mpg, respectively. Opting for the diesel engine will cost around £1,300 more.

For those interested in a plug-in hybrid model, the E 300 e is available. It combines the same petrol engine as the E 200 with an electric motor, resulting in a power output of 308bhp. The PHEV variant can run for up to 69 miles on electric-only power, with an average WLTP fuel consumption figure of over 470mpg. The additional PHEV hardware comes at a cost of £9,100 more than the petrol engine option.

The E-Class Estate is offered in various trim levels, starting with the AMG Line, which includes features such as 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, dual-zone climate control, wireless phone charging, and safety measures like blind spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The AMG Line Advanced trim adds more features, such as 19-inch wheels, powered front seats with memory function, parking assistance, and augmented reality for the sat-nav. The AMG Line Premium trim introduces the MBUX Superscreen, a 21-speaker Burmester sound system, active ambient lighting, and a digital key function. The top-of-the-line trim, AMG Line Premium Plus, includes additional features like 20-inch rims, four-zone climate control, a panoramic sunroof, a head-up display, and a 3D instrument cluster.

For the same price as the AMG Line Premium Plus trim, there is also an Exclusive Edition available, which adds specific interior and exterior styling touches, 21-inch wheels, and a bonnet-mounted three-pointed star. However, this trim is not available with the PHEV powertrain.

In terms of technology, all versions of the E-Class Estate come with the latest MBUX infotainment system, featuring a large 14.4-inch central screen and a 12.3-inch digital driver's display. The system includes new functions and services, as well as enhanced operation of the "Hey Mercedes" voice control function. From the AMG Line Premium trim and above, the system is upgraded to Mercedes' 'Superscreen' arrangement, which includes an additional screen for the front passenger within the same glass surface.
