Mitsubishi Mirage's Production to Cease by 2025
【Summary】Mitsubishi will discontinue the Mirage by 2025 as it plans to focus on crossovers and electric vehicles. The Mirage, known for its affordability, has seen declining sales in recent years. Despite its cheap price and impressive warranty, the aging Mirage lacks modern features and power. The decision to discontinue the model aligns with the industry trend of prioritizing vehicles with higher profit margins.
The current generation of the Mitsubishi Mirage exists primarily to meet emissions regulations and cater to the Thai market, where labor is relatively cheap. While it may not be a great car, it has developed a reputation as a bargain transportation option.
Mitsubishi had plans to abandon the sedan market altogether, focusing instead on developing crossovers and electric vehicles. This decision is in line with the industry trend of prioritizing larger vehicles with higher profit margins.
Despite the Mirage's affordability and impressive fuel economy, its starting price has increased over the years, making it less of a value proposition. Additionally, the car's performance is lackluster, and it struggles on steep hills.
While the Mirage's sales have been declining, the overall market for economy cars has also been shrinking. Other models in the segment, such as the Nissan Versa, have experienced similar drops in sales.
It remains uncertain how long the Mirage will continue to be available in North America, but sources suggest it may be discontinued by 2025. Mitsubishi has not provided a definitive statement on the matter.
