Mustang GTD: Ford's European Concern

Ford has unveiled its new Mustang GTD, a high-performance variant designed to compete with European sports cars. Ford CEO Jim Farley expressed his desire to see Porsche, Aston Martin, and Mercedes "sweat" with the release of the GTD. The GTD is based on the brand's Mustang GT3 car and incorporates engineering that is actually illegal in certain racing series.

The GTD name is derived from the IMSA GTD racing class and should not be confused with a diesel engine. Under the hood, the GTD features a bespoke 5.2-liter supercharged V8 with a dry sump engine oil system and a 7500rpm redline. Ford aims to achieve around 800bhp with the GTD. Power is transmitted to the rear wheels through an eight-speed transaxle gearbox and a carbon fiber driveshaft, maintaining a 50/50 front/rear weight balance.

The GTD also boasts race-illegal engineering, such as hydraulically-controlled front flaps for aerodynamic balance and coordination with the active rear wing. The car's active suspension with variable spring rates and ride height is also not allowed in racing. The GTD showcases Ford's state-of-the-art DSSV spool valve suspension technology, allowing for a lower ride height in Track mode.

Inside the GTD, Ford has incorporated Miko suede in the seat upholstery and 3D-printed titanium paddle shifters made from recycled retired F22 Raptors. However, the GTD will be a limited-run model, with an application process similar to that of the Ford GT to determine who can purchase one. Prices for the GTD start at $300,000 in the US.
