Nikola recalls delivered trucks for fire risk
【Summary】Nikola is recalling all 209 battery-powered electric trucks due to a coolant leak inside the battery pack causing fires. The company is suspending sales and contacting affected parties. Preliminary findings suggest no foul play or external factors were involved.
Nikola Corp. announced on Friday that it would be recalling all of its battery-powered electric trucks and suspending sales. This decision comes after an investigation into recent fires revealed a coolant leak inside a battery pack as the cause.
According to a spokesperson for Nikola, there are currently 209 battery-powered electric trucks in the marketplace between dealers and customers. The company is in the process of recalling these vehicles and reaching out to all parties involved.
The preliminary findings of the investigation were confirmed on Thursday when a "minor thermal incident" occurred on one of the packs in a parked engineering-validation truck. Fortunately, no injuries were reported.
Nikola stated that foul play or other external factors were unlikely to have caused the incident. The company is now working on providing a solution to the issue.
Initially, Nikola suspected foul play when they began the investigation in June after trucks at their Phoenix headquarters caught fire. Last month, one of the damaged trucks, which was being kept at the Phoenix site for monitoring, re-ignited.
