Rare Honda CRX Convertible Sale

The Honda CRX is a highly regarded sport compact car from the 1980s, known for its fun driving experience and class-leading performance. During its production, a limited number of convertible versions were also made, and one of these rare examples is currently up for sale in Colorado.

The specific car for sale is a Honda CRX Straman, believed to be from 1987. It is listed on Facebook Marketplace with an asking price of $5,800. The Straman CRX is a custom aftermarket conversion done by Straman Coachworks, a renowned custom shop known for their Camaro drop-top conversions in the 1980s. The result is a unique convertible with angular styling that stands out on the road. Only around 310 of these Straman CRXs were built during the decade, and only a small number have survived until today.

However, the seller points out a significant flaw with the Straman CRXs. The additional reinforcing members added to the body to compensate for the roof removal are prone to rusting, and this particular example shows signs of decay that require immediate attention.

Despite the rust issue, this car is still worth considering. It is an incredibly rare vehicle with an attractive blue-over-grey two-tone exterior. It also features Honda alloy wheels and a well-matched soft top that appears to be in good condition. Although it rides higher than usual, lowering it would be a straightforward modification if desired.

Based on the listing photos, the seller indicates that this car is equipped with a carbureted engine. This suggests that it is powered by Honda's 1.5-liter EW1 engine. While this engine may not align with what Honda offered in the 1987 model year, it is possible that Straman sold the CRX after a conversion done on a slightly older model.

The 1.5-liter EW1 engine is a 12-valve, single-overhead-cam unit that produces 76 horsepower. Although not particularly high-tech by today's standards, the CRX's lightweight construction, weighing under 1,900 pounds, compensates for the modest power output. The car is paired with a five-speed manual transmission for an engaging driving experience.

Inside the car, the interior appears to be remarkably well-preserved. The color scheme matches the exterior, with blues and greys dominating the cabin. The dashboard shows no major cracks, which is impressive for a convertible, and the gauge cluster has a charming orange color that was popular in the 1980s. The car has covered 113,000 miles so far, and apart from a dirty driver's side floor mat, the interior is in good condition. The stereo system also complements the interior design.

Restoring this car to roadworthy condition will be a challenging task, but it would undoubtedly become a favorite at Radwood events, which celebrate iconic cars from the 1980s and 1990s. The seller's photos show the car in a sunset-like setting, but with the right investment and effort, it can be brought back to its former glory.
