Revolutionary EV Charging Technology Ensures Grid Stability

A groundbreaking charging solution called PowerBank has been launched by EV charging platform Monta. This innovative technology detects grid imbalances and temporarily pauses EV charging sessions to prevent power blackouts. By connecting multiple charge points to the grid system, Monta can manage charging activities and stabilize the grid by adjusting to fluctuating electricity production and consumption.

PowerBank has already undergone successful Beta testing in Denmark and Sweden, where it aggregated an average of 3 megawatts of electricity demand at night, equivalent to 2,250 households. This capacity increased to 10 megawatts on some nights, enough to power approximately 6,000 households. Monta sees PowerBank as the first step towards a more sustainable and stable power grid.

Alok Dubey, regional director for Western Europe, emphasized Monta's commitment to making home-based EV charging more sustainable and future-proofing the EV ecosystem. He explained that PowerBank bolsters existing infrastructure, allowing charge point owners to actively protect their communities against blackouts and contribute to grid stability.

Initially, PowerBank will be available for Monta's fleet and private customers in Ireland, with plans to expand to the UK in December 2023. Users will earn Monta credits for each kilowatt-hour charged, which can be used for charging in Monta's Roaming network, paying subscriptions, or purchasing various items from the Monta Shop.

Dubey highlighted the urgency of developing a robust charge point infrastructure in the UK, as predictions estimate that by 2030, there will be 10 million EVs on UK roads, accounting for approximately 30% of all cars. PowerBank is seen as a crucial tool in supporting and strengthening the resilience of the existing infrastructure.

In addition to PowerBank, Monta has recently introduced the Virtual SolarCharging feature, enabling EV homeowners to generate their own electricity and reduce dependence on the National Grid, resulting in cost savings.
