Revolutionizing EV Charging and Ensuring Grid Stability
【Summary】Monta has launched PowerBank, an innovative charging solution for electric vehicles (EVs) that helps prevent power blackouts by intelligently detecting grid imbalances and pausing charging sessions. PowerBank connects multiple charge points to the grid system, allowing Monta to manage charging activities and distribute power to alleviate strain on the grid.
A new charging solution called PowerBank has been launched by EV charging platform Monta. This innovative solution detects grid imbalances and temporarily pauses EV charging sessions to prevent power blackouts. By connecting multiple charge points to the grid system, Monta can manage charging activities and stabilize the grid by adjusting to grid imbalances.
PowerBank has already undergone a successful Beta test program in Denmark and Sweden with 3,600 residential charge points. During the tests, Monta aggregated an average of 3 megawatts (MW) of electricity demand at night, equivalent to 2,250 households. On some nights, this rose to 10 MW, enough for about 6,000 households. These results demonstrate the potential of PowerBank to stabilize the grid during peak demand.
Monta sees PowerBank as the first step towards a more sustainable and stable power grid. Alok Dubey, the regional director for Western Europe, stated that Monta is committed to making home-based EV charging more sustainable and aims to future-proof the EV ecosystem. With PowerBank, charge point owners can actively safeguard their communities against blackouts and contribute to the broader goal of grid stability.
PowerBank is initially launching for Monta's fleet and private customers in Ireland, with availability in the UK starting from December 2023. Users of PowerBank will earn Monta credits for each kWh charged, which can be used for charging in Monta's Roaming network or for purchasing various items in the Monta Shop.
According to predictions, there will be approximately 10 million EV cars on UK roads by 2030, accounting for about 30% of all cars. This highlights the importance of implementing a robust charge point infrastructure in the UK. PowerBank is seen as a key tool in supporting and strengthening the resilience of existing infrastructure.
In addition to PowerBank, Monta has also introduced the Virtual SolarCharging feature, which allows EV homeowners to generate their own electricity and reduce their dependence on the National Grid. This feature not only provides cost savings but also promotes sustainability.
