Stellantis and Orano form partnership for EV battery recycling
【Summary】Stellantis and Orano are forming a joint venture to recycle EV batteries and scrap from gigafactories. This will give Stellantis access to cobalt, nickel, and lithium, strengthening its position in the EV battery value chain. The JV will produce materials that can be refined and reused in batteries, promoting a circular economy.
Stellantis N.V. (formerly known as Fiat Chrysler) announced on Tuesday that it has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Orano to establish a joint venture. The purpose of this joint venture is to recycle end-of-life electric vehicle (EV) batteries and scrap from gigafactories in Enlarged Europe and North America. This strategic move aims to strengthen Stellantis' position in the EV battery value chain by ensuring a reliable supply of cobalt, nickel, and lithium, which are essential for electrification and the energy transition.
Orano, a French company with a workforce of 17,000 employees, is involved in various activities such as uranium mining, conversion-enrichment, spent fuel recycling, nuclear logistics, dismantling, and nuclear cycle engineering. The joint venture will focus on producing materials commonly referred to as "black mass" or "active mass." These materials will undergo refining processes at Orano's planned hydrometallurgical plant in Dunkirk. The goal is to enable the reutilization of these materials in batteries, thus creating a closed-loop system that promotes a circular economy.
