When it comes to the Toyota Supra, a turbo straight six is a must-have for many enthusiasts. While the B58 engine may not match the power and flexibility of a BMW Motorsport six-pot, it still seems to suit the Supra well. With its fast and torquey performance, as well as good revving capabilities, the B58 engine does not disappoint.

However, it's not just the engine that I'm interested in exploring. I'm equally eager to test out the Supra manual's ride and handling. Toyota has made improvements to the car's adaptive dampers, power steering, and anti-roll bar bushes, which should enhance both the comfort and control of the Supra.

Four years ago, we praised the Supra's compliant touring ride but had some reservations about its body control on rough roads and the driver's connection with the front wheels. With plenty of country roads in the Midlands to test it on, I'm curious to see how much progress has been made in these areas.

But what really intrigues me is the process of getting to know the dynamic character of an analogue sports car. Few manufacturers offer classic, front-engined, rear-drive, three-pedal cars anymore, so it's a rare opportunity to spend weeks and months fine-tuning drive mode settings and tire pressures for the perfect driving experience.

Unfortunately, as road testers, we seldom have the chance to do this. Test cars come and go within a few days, and there are fewer cars with a straightforward mechanical temperament that invite such tinkering in the first place.

When it comes to ordering the GR Supra, it's not a complicated process either. If you opt for the bigger engine, you can choose between standard and Pro equipment specifications, as well as manual or automatic gearboxes. However, if you prefer a simpler and cheaper trim, the manual gearbox is your only option.

So, that's what we have – a no-frills sports car with plenty of driving to do to truly get to know it. No full leather seats, premium stereo, or adaptive cruise control, but more than enough kit to enjoy the experience. Let's get started.
