Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid engines

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its beloved Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a stronger chassis, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of appearance, Toyota has ditched the previous generation's awkward and angular design in favor of sleek retro panelling inspired by its iconic models from the 1980s and 1990s.

Despite the changes, the basic formula of the Land Cruiser remains the same. The body still sits on a traditional ladder frame, although it is now 50% stiffer and offers a 3.5-ton towing capacity. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's ruggedness. The Land Cruiser shares the same GA-F platform as the full-size 300-series model, which is not available in the UK or western Europe.

Currently, the Land Cruiser is powered by a 2.8-liter diesel engine that produces 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. However, in 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option. This hybrid system is expected to improve fuel economy at low speeds and in stop-start driving situations. Both engine options will be paired with a new eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, which promises smoother shifting compared to the previous six-speed transmission. It is unclear whether a manual option will be available.

The Land Cruiser's off-road capability has also been enhanced. It now features shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The anti-roll bar can be operated using a switch on the dashboard, improving the vehicle's ride quality and handling on rough terrain. Another notable change is the switch from hydraulic to electric power steering, which Toyota claims reduces kickback and improves maneuverability at all speeds.

In terms of durability, the Land Cruiser's body panels have been developed for easy repair or replacement. This is particularly true for the front bumper, which is divided into several sections. Inside the vehicle, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be easily operated with gloved fingers. The Land Cruiser will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the updated Land Cruiser will begin later this year, with deliveries expected to start in the first half of 2024. Additionally, Toyota will release a special First Edition model, limited to approximately 3,000 units for Europe. This exclusive model will feature classic round headlights and will be offered in sand or smoky blue paintwork.
