Mitsubishi's Electric Minivan Offers 112 Miles of Range, Debuts in Japan Next Month

In response to the increasing demand for electric light commercial vehicles, Mitsubishi Motors has announced an upgrade to its Minicab-MiEV all-electric vehicle for 2024. The new model, called Minicab EV, is specifically designed for urban commercial use and will be available for sale in Japan starting December 21.

Mitsubishi first introduced the Minicab platform in 1966 with a kei-class combustion-engine pickup truck. This was followed by a kei van based on the same platform, and the company has since introduced various other models. Over the past decade, major players in Japan's kei car segment have been focusing on electrification and introducing zero-emission variants of their commercial vehicles. Mitsubishi joined this trend by launching the Minicab i-MiEV, a five-door hatchback, in 2009 as the world's first mass-produced electric car. In December 2011, they followed up with the Minicab-MiEV, an electric version of their popular kei van.

The new Minicab EV is an evolution of the Minicab-MiEV, which has sold approximately 13,000 units since its launch 12 years ago. The upgraded model features a larger battery for an improved cruising range, as well as enhanced safety and convenience features to better meet the needs of commercial customers. In terms of design, it remains similar to its predecessor, with utilitarian styling and a compact monobox design that makes it ideal for last-mile delivery services in urban areas. It will be available as a two-seat cargo van with ample storage space or as a four-seater for operators who require less cargo space.

The Minicab EV is equipped with side and rear doors for easy access to the cargo compartment. Its compact design enables it to navigate crowded city streets and fit into tight parking spots for efficient package unloading. The most significant changes are found in the compact zero-emission powertrain, which includes a new generation of electric components. This includes an integrated motor drive with a 31-electric motor and inverter housed in a single casing, resulting in reduced volume, lower cost, and quieter operation. The electric motor produces 195 Nm (144 lb-ft) of torque, although the top speed has not been disclosed.

The vehicle draws power from a 20-battery pack, which provides an extended cruising range of 180 km or 112 miles per charge in WLTC mode. This represents a 35% increase compared to the previous model. Recharging the battery using 200V (15A) AC takes approximately 7.5 hours, while optional compatibility with DC fast charging stations allows the battery to reach 80% capacity in about 42 minutes.

In terms of safety, the Minicab EV is equipped with features such as Automatic High Beam (AHB), ABS, SRS, hill-start assist, lane departure alerts, front collision mitigation, parking sensors, and airbags. Additionally, the vehicle has improved front and rear shocks for a smoother ride. Other notable features include a 100-volt AC power outlet at the rear of the floor console for powering tools and appliances, as well as optional USB ports for charging mobile devices while on the move.

At this time, there is no information regarding international availability for the Mitsubishi Minicab EV. However, it will be available for purchase in Japan starting December 21. The two-seat version is priced at ¥2,431,000 (US$16,300), while the four-seater is priced at ¥2,486,000 (US$16,640), which is the same as the previous model. With its improved cruising range and enhanced safety features, the 2024 Minicab EV will be an attractive option for businesses looking to reduce their carbon footprint and operating costs.
