Toyota Land Cruiser gets updated with diesel and hybrid options

Toyota has introduced an updated version of its iconic Land Cruiser off-roader. The new model boasts a stronger chassis, a new eight-speed automatic transmission, and the option of a hybrid powertrain. In terms of appearance, Toyota has opted for sleek retro panelling inspired by its 1980s and 1990s models, abandoning the previous generation's angular design.

Despite the aesthetic changes, the Land Cruiser's core formula remains unchanged. It still features a traditional ladder frame, albeit one that is 50% stiffer and offers a towing capacity of 3.5 tons. The engine and transmission drive solid-beam axles, maintaining the vehicle's robustness.

The Land Cruiser's chassis is based on the GA-F platform used in the full-size 300-series Land Cruiser, which is not available in the UK or western Europe. Currently, power is derived from a 2.8-liter diesel engine with 201 horsepower and 500Nm of torque. In 2025, Toyota plans to offer a 48V mild hybrid system as an option, aimed at improving fuel economy in low-speed and stop-start driving situations.

The new Land Cruiser also features an upgraded eight-speed Direct Shift automatic transmission, ensuring smoother gear changes compared to its predecessor's six-speed transmission. It is unclear at this time whether a manual option will be available.

Enhancements have been made to the Land Cruiser's off-road capabilities as well. These include shorter overhangs, bodywork designed to provide better visibility of the terrain, and a disconnecting front anti-roll bar. The latter can be operated through a switch on the dashboard, improving ride quality and handling on rough terrain.

In terms of steering, the Land Cruiser has transitioned from hydraulic to electric power steering. Toyota claims that this change reduces kickback and enhances maneuverability at all speeds.

Given the vehicle's focus on off-road driving, Toyota has developed the body panels to facilitate easy repair or replacement, particularly the front bumper, which is divided into several sections.

Inside the Land Cruiser, buyers can expect a rugged interior with a central screen and chunky buttons that can be easily operated with gloves. The vehicle will be available in both five- and seven-seat configurations.

Pre-sales for the new Land Cruiser are set to begin later this year, with deliveries expected to commence in the first half of 2024. Additionally, a limited First Edition model will be offered, featuring classic round headlights and a choice of sand or smoky blue paintwork. Only around 3,000 units of this special edition will be produced for the European market.
