Toyota Prius returns to the UK

In a surprising turn of events, Toyota has announced that the latest Prius model will indeed be coming to the UK, despite previous reports stating otherwise. The car was unveiled in November 2022 and has already been available in other markets since the spring.

Initially, Toyota had cited decreased demand as the reason for not bringing the new Prius model to the UK. The popularity of other Toyota models like the C-HR and Corolla, which offered similar powertrains, had encroached on sales for the mid-size family car. The Prius had been particularly favored by the private hire industry in the UK due to its efficiency, but the Corolla had been steadily stealing sales in recent years.

The fifth-generation Prius continues to offer plug-in hybrid and 'Series Parallel Hybrid' powertrains, boasting impressive fuel economy of up to 217mpg and low CO2 emissions of 29g/km.

Visually, the new Prius features a sleeker exterior design, taking inspiration from Toyota's upcoming bZ range of electric cars. Inside, the Prius has received a fresh look with a larger touchscreen compared to previous models. Much of its technology has been borrowed from the all-electric bZ4X.

In Europe, pricing for the Prius is expected to range from around €45,000 to €50,000, making it considerably more expensive than the Corolla, which starts at £30,225 in the UK.
