Versatile Pickup Truck Set for Year-End Release

The Toyota Rangga Concept has made its debut at this year's Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS). It is a multi-purpose pick-up truck that offers buyers a platform that can be customized to their needs. The Rangga was showcased in various variants at GIIAS 2023, including the Mobile Cafe, Ambulance, Mobile Service Station for EVs, and Pace Car.

To encourage public participation and generate new ideas, Toyota Astra Motor (TAM) organized a contest where participants could create digital renderings of the Rangga based on three different themes: business, lifestyle, and public service. The contest received numerous creative ideas, such as an ice cream truck, a fire-fighting vehicle, a camper, an ambulance, a mobile cafe, and many pace trucks. Nine winners will have their renderings turned into mockups that will be presented during the Rangga's official launch.

The Rangga is expected to enter series production and go on sale in late 2023 or early 2024. Reports suggest that Thailand will be the initial rollout location, followed by Indonesia and other markets. Anton Jimmi Suwandy, TAM's marketing director, revealed that the production Rangga will be priced below the Hilux, ranging from 200 million to 300 million rupiah (around RM60,461 to RM90,691), positioning it as a smaller model compared to the Hilux.

According to Top Gear PH, the production Rangga will also be available in the Philippines, initially offering turbodiesel and petrol engines, with hybrid and fully electric options to be added in the future. It is also mentioned that the vehicle will come in cab and chassis models. However, Toyota has not released any official technical details at this time.

The name 'Rangga' is inspired by the Javanese word 'ronggo', which means hero and symbolizes strength and toughness. The name was previously used for a variant of the Kijang, a model sold in the 1990s in Indonesia. The Kijang, known as the Tamaraw in the Philippines, has evolved from being a multi-purpose pick-up to a more passenger-focused MPV over the years.
