Vital EV's Megawatt Charging Installation

In early 2024, Vital EV is set to introduce its Kempower megawatt charging solution, which will be among the first of its kind in the UK. This charging system has the capability to provide up to 1.2MW (1,200kW) of charging power, making it suitable for fast charging electric HGVs. It is estimated that around 372 miles of range can be added in just 30 minutes.

This exciting announcement follows Vital EV's recent installation of the UK's fastest EV chargers, which operate at 400kW, in Bedfordshire. Additionally, they have also established the largest electric truck charging depot in London. The Kempower satellite charger system, which the new solution is based on, features a compact design with a footprint of less than 0.25m². Two Kempower power units can be combined to accommodate up to 24 50kW power modules. Power is then distributed to the liquid-cooled satellite chargers, which are equipped with innovative MCS plugs.

Alex Rae, the general manager and director at Vital EV, expressed the importance of decarbonizing the truck industry in alignment with the UK's net-zero strategy. Rae stated, "We are thrilled to be one of the first companies to offer a viable charging solution for overnight, destination, and en-route applications. With our expertise in industrial power engineering and our successful track record in EV charging projects, we are well-positioned to deliver critical MCS infrastructure projects. We are excited to collaborate with the truck industry in making the essential transition to electric vehicles."

Currently, less than 1% of newly-registered trucks in the UK are electric. To support the adoption of battery electric trucks, Vital EV plans to establish a comprehensive charging network. The MCS plug has been specifically designed to deliver high charging power, enabling efficient charging of heavy-duty vehicles. It is important to note that there is no requirement to change the CCS2 connectors used in lighter EVs such as cars and vans.

Vital EV will monitor the chargers using their Occulus charging management portal. This platform will facilitate both planned and reactive maintenance, as well as over-the-air updates, ensuring maximum charger uptime and efficiency.
