The second-generation Mercedes AMG GT is set to be a closer rival than ever to the iconic Porsche 911. The design features active airflow elements at the front and a rear spoiler that deploys at higher speeds. There is also an option for a fixed wing made from plastic or carbon fiber. The overall look of the car is an evolution of the original GT, with a longer wheelbase, a front-end design in line with Mercedes' current styling direction, and a gently sloping roofline. From the rear three-quarter angle, the AMG GT showcases its muscular rear wheel arches.

The new model shares its platform with the AMG-developed SL, making it a 2+2 with small rear seats, similar to most 911 variants. Mercedes hopes that this added practicality will give customers one less reason to choose Porsche's offering. The AMG GT will be launched with a choice of twin-turbocharged V8 petrol engines, each paired with a nine-speed dual-clutch gearbox and four-wheel drive. The first version to arrive will be the AMG GT 63 4MATIC+ with 577bhp and 800Nm of torque, followed by the AMG GT 53 4MATIC+ with 469bhp and 700Nm. Top speeds for the two models stand at 195mph and 183mph respectively.

The AMG GT boasts impressive chassis tech, including rear-axle steering, adaptive dampers, an electronic limited-slip differential, and a semi-active hydraulics-based anti-roll bar system. The car also features a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system. Personalization options will be available, such as AMG Performance seats and carbon-ceramic brakes. Final specifications and pricing have yet to be announced, but a significant increase in price is expected.

Unlike its predecessor, there will not be a Roadster variant of the AMG GT. However, Mercedes is likely to produce a GT3 racing version and higher-performance roadgoing versions, potentially including hybrids with over 700bhp. Overall, the second-generation AMG GT promises to be a formidable competitor in the sports car market.
