2023 RZ EV: Lexus Continues Luxury Tradition

Over the past few years, downtown Los Angeles has been difficult to see clearly due to smog and weather conditions. Even during my recent visit to Griffith Park in a new Lexus RZ 450e, the haze obstructed the view. Disappointed, I left without getting out of the electric car.

Although air quality in L.A. has improved since the 1990s, southern California still has some of the worst air pollution in the country. The hope is that the electrification revolution and advancements in battery technology will contribute to better air quality. The question remains whether the Lexus RZ is the right electric vehicle to lead us into a cleaner future.

The exterior design of the RZ is not a drastic departure from previous Lexus models, which turns out to be a good thing. The driving experience of the RZ feels natural and familiar, making it a suitable choice for loyal Lexus customers who are transitioning to electric vehicles.

While the RZ has an electric powertrain, the acceleration is not instantaneous. There is a slight delay before the dual-motor all-wheel-drive system fully engages, delivering 308 horsepower and 320 lb-ft of torque. The RZ can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in around 4.8 seconds.

During my two-day test drive, the RZ proved to be luxurious, easy to drive, and capable. The suspension setup provides a comfortable ride, although there is some body roll during corners. The range of the RZ aligns with the estimates provided by Lexus.

When it comes to braking, the RZ feels similar to a traditional gasoline-powered vehicle. The regenerative braking system is not as pronounced as in some other electric vehicles. The 71.4-kWh lithium-ion battery pack provides an EPA-rated range of 220 miles on standard wheels, which can be reduced to 196 miles with larger rims. Charging the RZ on a 150-kW charger can take it from nearly empty to 80% in 30 minutes.

The interior of the RZ is luxurious and spacious. The reductive design creates an airy atmosphere, and the seats are supportive and comfortable. The 14-inch infotainment touchscreen dominates the cabin and offers wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The RZ also comes with a suite of driver aids and optional features such as a Mark Levinson Surround Sound system and multi-colored ambient interior lighting.

To address range anxiety, Lexus offers RZ buyers 30 complimentary days of gas-powered loan vehicles for the first three years. This perk allows for longer road trips without the worry of finding charging stations.

In conclusion, the Lexus RZ presents a compelling case for transitioning to electric vehicles. However, the ultimate goal of clean air and clear skies is still a work in progress.
