2024 Subaru Outback: The Optimal Wagon-SUV for You

The 2024 Subaru Outback is a versatile and capable SUV alternative that offers ample space, cargo-carrying versatility, and standard all-wheel drive. It surpasses other similarly priced crossover SUVs in terms of passenger and cargo space, ground clearance, and fuel efficiency. The Outback's rugged look and vibe make it a popular choice for outdoor enthusiasts, especially in regions like the Pacific Northwest, New England, Colorado, and Alaska. The Outback Wilderness version takes things up a notch with its extra capabilities.

However, the Outback may not be for everyone. It has imprecise steering and odd power delivery, which may not inspire confidence in some drivers. Its on-road handling and fuel economy, particularly in the Wilderness trim, may also be a drawback for some. Additionally, the Outback's aesthetics lean more towards the ugly end of the spectrum. Despite these drawbacks, we believe anyone considering comparably priced SUVs should at least consider the Outback.

In terms of updates for 2024, the Wilderness trim receives a new, rugged-looking front fascia. The rest of the design remains the same as the previous year's model. Other equipment updates include the addition of a heated steering wheel to the Onyx Editions and Wilderness trims, and the base engine Onyx Edition now comes with a sunroof and reverse automatic braking like its turbocharged counterpart.

The 2024 Outback's interior features a vertically oriented 11.6-inch touchscreen, which is easy to reach and read. However, it may appear rudimentary compared to screens found in other brands' vehicles. The interior design may not be particularly attractive, but the materials quality has improved. Even the base trim includes simulated leather stitching on the dash, doors, and center console. The Onyx Edition, Wilderness, and Touring trims offer unique upholstery options with added color accents.

Despite being classified as a wagon, the Outback offers more space than many compact crossovers like the Honda CR-V, Toyota RAV4, and Subaru's own Forester. It is especially noteworthy for parents with rear-facing child seats. The Outback also excels in cargo volume, with generous width and depth that make it more useful overall. The unique roof rails on most versions of the Outback swing inward to become their own crossbars, making it easier to load items on top.

The Outback comes with two engine options. The base engine is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 182 horsepower and offers excellent fuel economy. The upgrade engine is a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder that delivers 260 horsepower and provides a more compelling performance. The Outback's steering is numb on center, but it is easy to turn at low speeds and well-suited for off-road surfaces. The ride is acceptably firm, and the longer wheelbase contributes to a smoother, more composed ride.

Pricing for the 2024 Outback starts at $30,190 for the base trim and goes up to $44,090 for the Touring XT trim. Every Outback comes with a generous list of standard features, including advanced safety technologies such as forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and adaptive cruise control. The Outback has received top safety ratings from both government crash tests and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
