2024 BMW M2 Breaks Nurburgring Compact Car Record

Home > Industry Analysis > Content

【Summary】The new BMW M2 has set a record at the Nürburgring, beating the Audi RS3 and the old M2 with a time of 7:38.706 in the compact class segment. The car was fitted with parts that normal BMW customers can buy, unlike the fully caged Audi. However, the gap to the previous record-holding Audi is small. Despite its impressive record, the new M2 is not as compact as its predecessor but is still worth buying with its powerful engine and lower price compared to the M4.

2024 BMW M2 Breaks Nurburgring Compact Car Record

The new BMW M2 has proven to be a fast car around the track, setting a record at the Nürburgring in the compact class segment. With a time of 7:38.706, it beat out competitors such as the Audi RS3 and the old M2. While it may not be an all-out track record, it is still an impressive feat.

BMW released a video of the complete lap around the Nürburgring Nordschleife, showcasing the car's performance. The time achieved by the new M2 puts it ahead of its competitors and even surpasses the old M2. The previous record holder, the Audi RS3, still holds a narrower gap with a time of 7:40.748.

What sets BMW's record apart is that the M2 used for the record-setting lap was fitted with parts that are available for purchase by regular customers. In contrast, the Audi RS3 used for its record run was heavily modified. However, it is still possible for Audi to come back with a special-edition RS3 and beat BMW's time.

Although the new M2 has achieved an impressive record, it is not quite the same as its first-generation counterpart. The current "compact" 2 Series is more similar to a shortened 4 Series and weighs close to 4,000 pounds as a result. However, it makes up for it with its powerful six-cylinder engine, producing 453 horsepower, and the option for a manual transmission. Additionally, being a manual, rear-wheel drive coupe in a time when such cars are becoming rare, it is still a worthwhile purchase, especially considering its lower price compared to the M4.
