2024 Ford Puma EV: Extended Range, Affordable Price

Ford of Europe is facing challenges in market share and profitability, but they have a plan to phase out all combustion-engined vehicles in the region by the end of the decade. The Puma subcompact crossover, manufactured in Romania, is a crucial part of Ford's transition to an EV-only lineup in the European Union and the United Kingdom.

The Puma, named after a previous coupe model, was introduced in 2019 with design input from Thomas Morel and replaces the Fiesta in Ford's European lineup. It offers a range of 1.0- and 1.5-liter turbocharged engines and is exclusively front-wheel drive. Ford plans to introduce an electric version of the Puma in 2024.

According to Auto Bild, a leading German motoring publication, the Puma EV is expected to have a starting price of 36,000 euros, which is equivalent to $39,300 dollars. While this may seem expensive, it is comparable to other B-segment crossovers in the market. The Puma EV is estimated to have a driving range of around 400 kilometers, making it a competitive choice in its segment.

The Puma EV will be produced alongside the combustion-engined versions of the vehicle. The platform used for the Puma EV is adapted from the Global B-car vehicle architecture, which is also used for the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier vans. These vans offer various engine options, including a 136-ps electric drive unit.

The E-Tourneo Courier, a five-seater van with electric capabilities, was launched in May 2023. It can add 87 kilometers of driving range in just 10 minutes of charging at a DC fast charge. Charging from 10 to 80 percent takes under 35 minutes, while a full overnight charge takes 5.7 hours.

Ford has confirmed that the Puma EV will be available by 2024 and is likely to include a one-pedal driving mode, similar to the E-Tourneo Courier and E-Transit Courier. However, the battery capacity and WLTP combined range of both vans have not been officially announced by Ford.
