2024 Ford Puma EV: Extended Range, Affordable Price

Ford of Europe is facing challenges in market share and profitability, but the automaker has a plan to transition to an EV-only lineup in the European Union and the United Kingdom. The Puma subcompact crossover, manufactured in Romania, plays a crucial role in this transition.

The Puma, introduced in 2019, is a B-segment crossover that replaces the Fiesta in Ford's European lineup. It features stylish design and is available with 1.0- and 1.5-liter turbocharged engines. The Puma is exclusively front-wheel drive and will be joined by an electric version in 2024.

According to Auto Bild, a German motoring publication, the Puma EV is expected to have a starting price of 36,000 euros, which is approximately $39,300. While this may seem expensive, it is comparable to other B-segment crossovers in the market.

The Puma EV is estimated to have a driving range of around 400 kilometers according to the WLTP combined test cycle. This makes it a competitive option in the growing electric vehicle segment.

The Puma EV will be produced alongside the combustion-engined versions of the Puma. The combustion-engined Puma ST, for example, is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine.

Instead of developing a new platform, Ford has adapted the Global B-car vehicle architecture for the Puma EV. This platform is also used in the Transit Courier and Tourneo Courier vans, which offer various engine options including an electric drive unit.

The E-Tourneo Courier, a five-seater van with electric capabilities, was launched in May 2023. It has a fast charging capability that can add 87 kilometers of driving range in 10 minutes. The Puma EV is expected to have similar features.

Although Ford has not confirmed the battery capacity and WLTP combined range for the Puma EV, it is anticipated to be unveiled in 2024 along with the E-Tourneo Courier and E-Transit Courier panel van.
