2024 Mazda 2 hybrid receives a fresh look with Toyota influences

Mazda has introduced an updated version of its hybrid supermini, which now features refreshed styling at the front and rear. Previously, the Mazda 2 Hybrid closely resembled the Toyota Yaris, but this update aims to distinguish it from its Toyota counterpart.

While the two cars still share the same basic body and lights, the Mazda 2 Hybrid now sports new bumpers and fresh wheels, significantly altering its overall appearance. This design change allows the hybrid model to fit more seamlessly into Mazda's stylish lineup and creates a noticeable distinction between the Mazda 2 and the Toyota Yaris.

Inside the car, the simple and durable interior remains largely unchanged, with minor updates to the trim and interior colors. However, the tech package has been upgraded. The dashboard now features a larger 10.5-inch touchscreen with improved smartphone connectivity and higher screen resolution. It is worth noting that the interface remains Toyota's basic system, rather than Mazda's click-wheel MZD-Connect setup found in other Mazda models. Additionally, high-spec models offer a new 12.3-inch digital dial pack, along with optional features like a head-up display and a glass roof.

The main reason for this collaboration between Mazda and Toyota is Mazda's desire to offer a hybrid supermini powertrain, which this new model continues to provide. Under the bonnet, the Mazda 2 Hybrid houses a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a small but effective self-charging hybrid system. This powertrain produces 114bhp and boasts an impressive fuel efficiency of 74.3mpg on the combined WLTP cycle, emitting only 87g/km of CO2.

While UK prices and specifications for the updated model have yet to be confirmed, it is expected that the pricing and range structure will remain largely the same as the existing model. Currently, the Mazda 2 Hybrid lineup starts at £23,730, but the new model will likely adopt the four-trim range structure available in other Mazda models.

It is important to note that the mild-hybrid Mazda 2 supermini is still available and is a distinct model from the Mazda 2 Hybrid. The mild-hybrid Mazda 2 has also recently undergone a facelift and is priced starting at £18,615.
