2024 Vauxhall Crossland successor brings back Frontera

The ageing Vauxhall Crossland is set to be replaced by an all-new small SUV in the not-too-distant future. Our spy photographers have caught the car testing once again, revealing some interesting details. Like its Mokka sibling, the new model will be available with a choice of petrol or electric power. There are even rumors that the new SUV could revive the Vauxhall Frontera name from the brand's past.

Vauxhall is undergoing a design revolution, with the Astra now one of the better-looking hatchbacks on sale. The Mokka has also transformed from a dowdily-designed soft-roader to a stylish SUV. Now, the firm is readying a new small crossover for 2024 to sit alongside the Mokka. The latest spy pictures give us a good idea of how the new Frontera might look. It will have a boxier shape than the old Crossland, resembling a more conventional SUV. The front end will feature the now synonymous Vauxhall ‘Vizor' grille, and the overall design will convey a chunky, robust look.

The Crossland replacement will be positioned as a practicality-focused offering for buyers who want more space and utility. It will compete with family cars from Dacia and the Citroen C3 Aircross. Despite its compact footprint, the new model will offer a good level of luggage room and interior space. There are even indications that it could be offered with three rows of seats to maximize usability.

Moving to the CMP platform, the new car will offer pure-petrol, mild-hybrid petrol, and full EV powertrain options. The petrol engine will likely be Vauxhall's 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo, available in different outputs. The new crossover is also expected to feature a 48-volt mild-hybrid option, similar to the updated Corsa supermini. Vauxhall has committed to offering a fully electric version of its entire lineup by 2024, so it's likely that the new SUV will also have an electrified variant.

The CMP platform has recently been upgraded to include a bigger battery and a more powerful motor. This technology will be available in the new SUV, providing additional range and performance. Both the petrol and electric versions of the Crossland replacement will benefit from rapid-charging capability. Inside, the small SUV is expected to feature Vauxhall's Pure Panel infotainment set-up, offering a range of digital dash and infotainment screens.

Given the expected focus on value for money, the replacement for the Crossland could be priced from less than £25,000. The all-electric model is likely to have a higher price point, starting from around £36,000. The new SUV is set to be revealed in the first half of 2024.

Overall, the new Vauxhall small SUV promises to be a practical and versatile option for buyers, with a range of powertrain choices and modern features. It will be interesting to see how it competes in the highly competitive small SUV segment.
