2025 Mercedes-AMG E53 PHEV Wagon: A True Hybrid

Musclebound mid-size wagons like the AMG-tweaked E-Class and BMW M-tuned 5-Series are renowned for being excellent daily drivers. These vehicles offer a combination of luxury, comfort, and refinement, as well as ample passenger and cargo space for road trips or trips to the DIY store. Additionally, they provide impressive performance and handling that will surely tempt drivers to take the scenic route home from work on multiple occasions.

In 2025, the E53 is set to become even more versatile with the introduction of hybrid power. Rumors suggest that the current model's 429 hp twin-turbo V6 will be replaced by a new electrically-assisted inline six, which incorporates a single motor integrated with the automatic transmission. This powertrain, possibly derived from the S580e PHEV, is expected to deliver a total system output of around 503 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, resulting in a zero to 60 mph time of under four seconds. However, the range of the hybrid E53 on a full battery charge has yet to be confirmed.

The latest C63 S E Performance has already transitioned from a V8 to a PHEV inline four. However, due to its performance-focused hybrid system and small 6.1 kWh battery, it can only travel 8 miles on electric power. In contrast, the S580e boasts a larger 28.6 kWh battery, enabling it to achieve a genuine 70 miles of zero-emissions driving.

While the full powertrain details of the E53 are still unknown, some information about the rest of the package is available. Based on the non-AMG E-Class and prototype images with minimal disguise, it is expected that the E53 will be available as both a sedan and a wagon. Many features will be shared with the regular Mercedes-badged E-Class, such as the star motif in the taillights, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, a 14.4-inch infotainment system, and an optional 12.3-inch passenger display. However, the E53 will differentiate itself with AMG-specific steering wheel and seats, as well as a distinct exterior design that includes a classic AMG Panamericana grille, large alloy wheels with prominent brakes, and a quad-exhaust setup.

The AMG E53 is anticipated to make its debut either late this year or early next year, with sales commencing in mid-2024. It is likely that only the sedan variant will be available in North America, where it is expected to have a higher price tag than the current starting price of $81,300 for the 2023 sedan.
