£420k EV charging scheme launches in Dudley

Dudley Metropolitan Council has announced plans to install 37 new on-street electric vehicle (EV) charging points throughout the borough. The £420k scheme is funded through a grant from the Office of Zero Emission Vehicles (OZEV) and a contribution from a charge-point operator.

Last year, the council conducted a consultation on 53 proposed EV charge point locations. Of these, 37 received majority support and have been selected to host the new charge points. The posts, which are described as "small" and "unobtrusive," have been designed to be placed at the edge of the footway. This is to accommodate residents who wish to own an EV but do not have their own driveway or access to off-street charging facilities.

The charge points will have a charging capacity of 7kW, which can provide a full charge in approximately six hours.

Councillor Dr Rob Clinton, cabinet member for climate change, emphasized the importance of these charge points in Dudley borough's approach to EV charging. He stated that they will not only assist residents who face difficulties charging their electric vehicles at home but also contribute to reducing emissions as part of the Black Country Ultra-Low Emission Vehicle Strategy. He added that this initiative is one of many small changes being made at the local level, which will collectively have a significant impact.

Councillor Damian Corfield, cabinet member for highways and environmental services, assured residents that the installation of the charge points will cause minimal disruption. He mentioned that the small and discreet charge points should take around four days to fit. Corfield also highlighted the benefits of this investment, stating that it will provide thousands of residents with the convenience of accessing EV charge points on their street instead of having to install their own at home. He emphasized that dedicated, shared charging bays will make this a safer and more efficient way of bringing charge points to the community.

The EV chargers will be available to the public and will feature a Pay-As-You-Go payment system at the minimum. The installation process, including signage and road markings, is expected to take up to a week for each charge point. Additionally, a consultation for proposals on further charge points in more locations across the borough will be launched in the coming weeks.
