Audi and Porsche have begun building electric motors for the long-awaited Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV platform. The PPE platform, which was announced in 2018, is a collaboration between the two premium brands of Volkswagen.

The PPE platform is designed to lower costs, enable faster charging, and offer the latest in digitalization and autonomous driving. It was intended to speed up the rollout of new Audi and Porsche electric models. However, several delays have pushed back the launch of the platform and the highly-anticipated electric Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron.

At a recent Volkswagen board of directors meeting, the automaker revealed plans to delay its 1.2 software, which powers the new Porsche and Audi EVs, by another 16-18 weeks. These delays have further impacted the release of new electric vehicles.

Audi announced the start of electric motor production for the PPE platform at its manufacturing site in Győr, Hungary. The site is predestined for the production of highly compact and efficient electric motors for the PPE, according to Audi CEO Gernot Döllner. The site also builds drive systems for the Audi Q8 e-tron and will set up a production area for electric motors used in VW Group MEBeco-based vehicles.

Audi has established three new production lines to produce electric motors, employing around 700 employees working in three shifts. The site supplies both Porsche and Audi. The production of up to 2,000 e-motors a day for the upcoming PPE is expected.

The Audi Q6 e-tron will be the first electric vehicle based on the PPE platform. Production of the first PPE-based Audi model is expected to start by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the Porsche Macan EV is set to launch on the PPE platform next year, with Porsche's production manager, Albrecht Reimold, ensuring its delivery to customers in 2024.
