Audi's groundbreaking electric motor for next-gen EV platform with Porsche

Audi and Porsche have begun building electric motors for the highly-anticipated Premium Platform Electric (PPE) EV platform. The PPE platform, which was announced in 2018, is a collaboration between Volkswagen's premium brands and is designed to lower costs, enable faster charging, and offer the latest in digitalization and autonomous driving. It was intended to speed up the rollout of new Audi and Porsche electric models.

However, the PPE platform has faced several delays, pushing back the launch of new EVs such as the electric Porsche Macan and Audi Q6 e-tron. The first models based on the PPE were initially expected to launch before the end of 2021, but these delays have caused them to be pushed back by several years.

At a recent Volkswagen board of directors meeting, the automaker revealed plans to delay its 1.2 software, which is set to power new Porsche and Audi EVs, by another 16-18 weeks. This further delay adds to the challenges faced by the PPE platform.

Despite the setbacks, Audi has announced a new chapter in drive production at its manufacturing site in Győr, Hungary. The site has begun production of electric motors for the PPE EV platform. Audi CEO Gernot Döllner stated that Győr is well-suited for the production of these compact and efficient electric motors.

The Győr site also builds drive systems for the Audi Q8 e-tron and is setting up a production area for electric motors to be used in VW Group MEBeco-based vehicles. Audi has established three new lines to produce electric motors and around 700 employees are working in three shifts to build up to 2,000 e-motors a day for the upcoming PPE platform.

The Audi Q6 e-tron will be the first EV based on the PPE platform, and production of the first model is expected to start by the end of the year. The Porsche Macan EV, which is also set to launch on the PPE platform, is expected to be delivered to customers in 2024.
