BMW i5 Electric Car Review

Running costs for a BMW i5 can be quite high, with our test car coming in at a staggering £115,000. This price puts it in direct competition with other luxury electric vehicles like the Audi e-tron GT and Porsche Taycan. However, the electrified 5 Series offers significant Benefit In Kind savings for company drivers and the convenience of home charging with off-peak electricity rates. These factors may help offset the high initial cost.

When it comes to reliability, BMW, like other premium brands, often faces challenges due to the complexity of their products and the costs of repairs. Since the i5 is a relatively new addition to the market, it remains to be seen how it will fare in terms of reliability.

BMW has made significant advancements in safety technology for the i5. The car includes features like zero-tolerance speed limit warnings and lane-keeping assist. While these features can be intrusive at times, they contribute to a safer driving experience. The semi-automated lane changes, activated by clicking the indicator and looking in the mirror, are particularly impressive. Overall, the safety tech in the i5 is highly effective.

The BMW i5 offers ample comfort for four passengers, with plenty of space and luxurious amenities. The electric propulsion system provides a quiet and smooth ride, and the lower seating position reduces body roll. However, the car does suffer from some tire noise on rough roads. The optional Comfort Plus Pack adds power-adjustable, heated, and ventilated front seats, enhancing the overall comfort level. The use of non-animal-based upholstery materials also adds a touch of sustainability.

The BMW i5 comes with a range of impressive features. The digital driving environment, paired with a large central screen, offers a sleek and user-friendly interface. The operating system is refined and intuitive, with integrated CarPlay and Android Auto navigation. Additional features like a Harman Kardon surround sound stereo and touch-sensitive dashboard controls are included. However, some of the standard trim options may feel a bit cheap for a car in this price range.
