BMW tests hydrogen car
【Summary】BMW is testing a fleet of nearly 100 hydrogen vehicles, including the BMW iX5, which has a range of 313 miles. The hydrogen needed to power the fuel cell is stored in two carbon-fibre tanks and can be filled up in just a few minutes. BMW sees hydrogen as a key energy source in the transition to climate-neutral mobility. The company aims to achieve full climate neutrality and reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle by at least 40% by 2030.
BMW is embarking on a pilot program with a fleet of nearly 100 hydrogen vehicles. The BMW iX5, which has been in development for four years, is now being deployed internationally for trial purposes.
One of the key features of the BMW iX5 is its impressive range of 313 miles. The hydrogen needed to supply the fuel cell is stored in two 700-bar tanks made of carbon-fibre reinforced plastic (CFRP). These tanks can be filled up in just three to four minutes, providing convenience and efficiency.
Oliver Zipse, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, highlighted the importance of hydrogen as a versatile energy source in the transition towards a sustainable future. He emphasized that hydrogen is one of the most efficient ways of storing and transporting renewable energies. Zipse also emphasized the need for collaboration and the use of multiple technologies to achieve climate-neutral mobility worldwide.
The BMW iX5 is part of the company's 'Business Ambition for 1.5°C campaign', which aims to achieve full climate neutrality throughout the value chain. As part of this campaign, the BMW Group has set a target to reduce CO2 emissions per vehicle over its full lifecycle by at least 40% by 2030, compared to the levels in 2019.
