BYD electric truck patent hints at upcoming EV release
【Summary】BYD, the Chinese automaker and battery maker, is set to release a new electric pickup truck by the end of 2023. The leaked patent reveals the truck's design, which features the BYD nameplate and rugged fenders. It is expected to be part of BYD's Ocean Series. The electric truck will compete with Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV. The truck is likely to come in all-electric and PHEV variants and will feature a head-up display from Huawei.
A new electric pickup truck is set to be released by BYD by the end of the year, according to a leaked patent. BYD, the battery maker turned EV manufacturer, has been experiencing significant growth and is on track to surpass Tesla as the top-selling EV maker. In September, they sold a record-breaking 151,193 fully electric vehicles. BYD's success extends overseas, with leading positions in countries such as Thailand, Brazil, Columbia, and Israel. They have also launched new models in Japan, Mexico, India, Australia, Hungary, and more.
BYD's main advantage in the EV market is affordability. While most automakers are facing losses on each EV sold, BYD is able to generate a profit. The company has achieved nearly full integration, with most components of their Dolphin EV being built in-house.
According to the leaked patent, BYD is planning to launch an electric truck by the end of 2023. Although specific details about the truck have not been released, reports suggest that it will be part of BYD's Ocean Series and will feature the BYD nameplate. The design of the truck, created by ex-Audi and current BYD designer Wolfgang Egger, includes a prominent "BYD" logo on the front grille, four doors, and rugged fenders.
The electric truck has been spotted during testing, and its appearance has been compared to the Toyota Tacoma. However, it is expected to be slightly shorter in length, measuring around 209" compared to the Tacoma's 225". The truck will compete with other electric pickups such as Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV.
Inside the truck, a head-up display from Huawei has been observed. It is anticipated that the electric truck will be available in both all-electric and PHEV variants. More information about the truck is expected to be released closer to its launch.
In China, pickup trucks are becoming increasingly popular as people seek outdoor adventures and a break from the daily grind. This trend is reflected in the growing number of EV releases in China that cater to outdoor enthusiasts. For example, GM's joint venture in China launched the Wuling Bingo, which features an inflatable mattress in the rear for camping. Other brands like Geely's Radar have already started exporting electric trucks to overseas markets. Stay tuned for further updates on BYD's new electric pickup truck.
