Nissan Sunderland's upcoming models: Juke and Qashqai
【Summary】Nissan has confirmed that the next generation of the Nissan Juke and Qashqai will be produced at its Sunderland plant, securing thousands of jobs. The announcement comes as the company focuses on electrification and follows the collapse of plans for a nearby gigafactory. The EV36Zero hub, with a potential capacity for 100,000 EVs per year, will contribute to these plans. The government has also announced £2 billion of support for zero-emissions in the automotive industry.
Nissan has confirmed that it will produce the upcoming electric Nissan Juke and the Nissan Qashqai, Britain's best-selling car, at its Sunderland plant, securing thousands of jobs. This announcement comes after discussions involving Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Chancellor Jeremy Hunt. The future of the Sunderland factory had been uncertain, but it received a boost from a trade deal between the UK and EU. The collapse of Britishvolt's gigafactory plans also increased the focus on Nissan's plant and its electrification.
Nissan Sunderland is no stranger to building electric vehicles, as it has already manufactured the first and second-generation Leaf. In addition, a £1 billion "EV36Zero hub" has been established, creating 900 jobs initially. The hub aims to support the production of the next-generation Juke and Qashqai, potentially generating more jobs and securing the existing workforce of over 6,000 people. With a capacity of 9GWh, expandable to 35GWh, the EV36Zero hub could facilitate the production of 100,000 EVs per year at the Sunderland plant.
Sky News reported this development shortly after Chancellor Jeremy Hunt announced £2 billion of support for zero-emissions in the automotive industry in the government's Autumn Statement. However, no incentives or reduced VAT costs for electric vehicle customers were included in the announcement.
