Canoo unveils tough new electric pickup truck

EV maker Canoo introduced its newest model, the "American Bulldog" electric pickup truck, on Friday. Canoo claims that this electric truck embodies the American spirit with its determination and innovation.

After resolving a multiyear SEC investigation earlier this year, Canoo is eager to move forward and leave the past behind.

The struggling EV startup has delivered vehicles to notable clients such as the US Army and NASA. Additionally, it has expanded its customer base to include Walmart.

In August, Canoo secured $113 million in incentives for its EV assembly and battery module manufacturing plants in OKC and Pryor. It also unveiled the LDV 190, a Class 3 electric cargo van, further expanding its product range.

The LDV 190 shares the same Mutli-Purpose platform as the LDV 130 but features a stronger suspension to handle heavier loads.

Canoo's lineup of vehicles is built upon its MPP (Multi-Purpose Platform), which serves as the foundation for all its models. The lineup includes the Lifestyle Vehicle (Delivery, Base, Premium, and Adventure), Multi-Purpose Delivery Vehicle, and pickup.

Canoo's latest innovation, the American Bulldog electric truck, was unveiled on Friday. This EV pickup is based on the Screaming Eagle model that was previously tested by the US Army in 2022.

The American Bulldog represents Canoo's commitment to rapid product development and real-world testing. According to Tony Aquila, Canoo's CEO, this vehicle symbolizes loyalty, courage, and American innovation.

The electric pickup boasts a robust and rugged design, likened to the strength and determination of American workers, reminiscent of popular trucks like the Chevy Silverado or Ford F-150.

While the American Bulldog appears sleek and functional, its chances of hitting the streets are slim. Like other EV startups, Canoo is facing significant financial challenges. The company has only recently started generating revenue through its contract with the US government.

In the first half of the year, Canoo reported a loss of $161.6 million with no revenue generated. The company's production plans require substantial funding, and as of June, Canoo had around $5 million in cash and equivalents.

Over the past few years, Canoo has expressed doubts about its ability to continue operations due to a lack of funding.

Canoo will release its third-quarter earnings on November 14, providing more insight into its financial situation.

Despite these challenges, Canoo hopes to benefit from its "Made in America" strategy if it can sustain its operations. Customers who purchase a Canoo EV can take advantage of the IRA's Commercial Clean Vehicle Tax Credit, which offers a $7,500 tax credit.
