If you're in search of a car with the luxurious feel of a boutique hotel, the DS 7 might be the perfect choice. Unlike its German competitors like the Audi Q3, the DS7 offers a unique French aesthetic. The interior design reflects this with diamond patterns found in various elements, from switches to the digital instrument display.

Opinions on the overall look of the car may vary, as some may find it chic while others might consider it a bit self-conscious. One example of this contrasting style is the dashboard clock, which features Art Deco-style graphics that don't quite match the Modernist fixtures and fittings that surround it.

The DS7, previously known as the DS7 Crossback, has been around for the past six years. The new model features a re-styled front end with a larger grill, slimmer headlamps, and vertical sidelights that resemble claw marks. The rear lamp clusters have also been slimmed down, and changes to the car's brightwork indicate a refreshed appearance.

Inside, there are design tweaks as well. The center of the dashboard features a large touch screen with widgets, making navigation fairly straightforward. However, like many high-end cars, the DS7 offers a multitude of functions, which can be a bit overwhelming.

The DS7 is available in different power options, including 1.5-liter diesel versions and plug-in hybrids with 1.6 petrol engines. The hybrid models come with one or two electric motors, depending on whether they have four-wheel drive. Unfortunately, there is no petrol-only version available.

We had the opportunity to drive an Opera E-TENSE 4x4 300, one of the five trim levels offered. This particular model utilizes electric motors to boost performance and switch between petrol and battery power. It can also be driven in electric-only mode, with a claimed range of around 43 miles. However, in our experience, the battery ran out after approximately half that distance.

Charging the car can be done while driving or by plugging it into a 7kw EV charger, which takes about two hours for a full charge. Alternatively, a domestic socket trickle charge will take approximately six and a half hours.

There are a few criticisms of the DS7. The front doors lack electric window switches, which are instead located on the outer edges of the center console. The parking brake switch is also in the same area, which can lead to accidental activation. Additionally, the brakes initially feel spongy and require a firm push to engage, resulting in a less-than-smooth stop at times.

Despite its size, the DS7 is surprisingly nimble and quick, reaching 60 mph in just 5.9 seconds and capable of a top speed of 146 mph. Its suspension, with three settings, provides a firm but generally comfortable ride. On 4x4 versions, the suspension is controlled by a computer with a camera that adjusts the ride stiffness to accommodate road imperfections.

The car offers good mechanical refinement, especially in electric mode where it is virtually silent. The four-cylinder 1.6 petrol engine can sound busy at times, but it remains unobtrusive. The DS7 provides a quiet and serene driving experience, particularly on motorways, with minimal wind buffeting.

The upgraded headlamp cluster performs well, illuminating country lanes with a broad spread of white light. As an expensive car, the DS7 is equipped with various features, including electric reclining rear seats and a suite of safety and driver aids. Some functions, such as controlling the interior temperature and the plug-in charging system, can be managed remotely using a phone.

Overall, the DS7 is a pleasant car with ample space for passengers and their belongings. It offers a smooth and comfortable driving experience, as well as an abundance of safety and convenience features. While it may not have the same brand recognition as BMW or Mercedes, the DS7's niche appeal sets it apart and makes it an appealing choice for certain buyers.
