Electric Minis revive original's playfulness

The BMW-era Mini has never been known for its small size. Over the years, cars have been getting bigger, but the original 'new' Mini from 2000 fit nicely into the compact city car class.

Now, the fifth generation of the Mini has been revealed ahead of the 2023 IAA International Motor Show in Munich. Alongside it is the third generation of the larger Mini Countryman, which is available in an all-electric version for the first time.

Both models feature a more pared-back and straightforward design language, which Mini refers to as 'Charismatic Simplicity'. This design approach aims to reset the creeping distortion of the original Mini's simplicity, with smoother surfaces and better integration of elements like the rear lights.

The influence of Paul Smith's minimalist Mini Electric can be seen in these new models, with an emphasis on a minimal look and less fuss in the materials and surfaces.

The new Mini Cooper SE EV is particularly effective, with an interior dominated by a 24cm circular touch-screen information display. The Mini Countryman has also grown larger and features the same tech upgrades as its smaller sibling.

Both models will be available with traditional combustion engines, but Mini is pushing the capabilities of the EVs. The Countryman will have a range of around 287 miles, while the smaller Cooper will have a range of 190 miles in 'E' trim and 250 miles in 'SE' trim.

Both cars are set to hit the market next year, and we look forward to exploring what they have to offer.

MINI Cooper Electric will be available from £30,000 in spring 2024, while the MINI Countryman will be available from £28,500 in February 2024. For more information, visit Mini.co.uk.
