Electric truck patent reveals upcoming EV by 2023

A new electric pickup truck is set to be released by BYD by the end of the year, according to a leaked patent. This reveals the design of the electric truck as BYD continues its expansion in the automotive industry.

BYD, a battery maker turned EV manufacturer, achieved another record with 151,193 fully electric vehicles sold in September. This growth puts BYD just a few thousand electric models away from surpassing Tesla as the top-selling EV maker. In the second quarter, Tesla delivered 435,059 EVs compared to BYD's 431,603.

BYD is finding success not only in China but also overseas. It currently leads in countries like Thailand, Brazil, Columbia, and Israel. With the launch of new models in countries such as Japan, Mexico, India, Australia, and Hungary, BYD aims to maintain its momentum until the end of the year. Last month, BYD celebrated the production of its 500,000th Dolphin electric hatchback and Yuan Plus.

One of BYD's main advantages is its affordability. While many automakers are incurring losses on each EV sold, BYD is able to generate a profit. The company has achieved nearly full integration, with everything on the Dolphin EV being built in-house except for the tires and windows.

BYD plans to launch an electric truck by the end of 2023, as revealed by a leaked patent. The new electric truck will carry the BYD nameplate and is expected to be part of BYD's Ocean Series, although specific details have not been released. Designed by Wolfgang Egger, a former Audi designer now working for BYD, the EV truck features a prominent "BYD" logo on the front grille, four doors, and rugged fenders.

The electric pickup truck from BYD has been spotted during the final stages of testing, with heavy camouflage that matches the patent images. At a glance, it may resemble a new Toyota Tacoma, but it is expected to be slightly shorter at around 209" compared to the Tacoma's 225". The BYD electric pickup truck will compete with Ford's F-150 Lightning, Geely's Radar RD6, and the Dongfeng Rich 6 EV. It is anticipated that the EV truck will be available in all-electric and PHEV variants, with sightings of a head-up display from Huawei in the interior. The official launch is expected by the end of the year.

As pickup trucks gain popularity in China for outdoor activities and adventures, there is a noticeable trend in the release of new EVs specifically designed for the outdoors. For instance, GM's joint venture in China launched the Wuling Bingo, which features an inflatable mattress in the rear for camping. Geely's Radar is also exporting electric trucks to overseas markets. More information about BYD's new electric pickup truck is expected to be revealed closer to its launch.

Stay tuned for the latest updates on BYD's electric truck.
