Electric Vehicles in 2023: 7 Key Factors for EV Buyers

If you're considering switching from a gas-powered or hybrid car to an electric vehicle (EV), there are some important insights you should be aware of. First, be prepared for a learning curve when it comes to the touch screen in EVs. Navigating all the features on the touch screen may require some time to adjust. It's recommended to sit down and get comfortable with the vehicle's manual and ask for comprehensive demos from salespeople to understand how the touch screen operates.

For spontaneous adventurers who enjoy last-minute road trips, it's important to note that road trips with an EV require more careful planning. While you can charge your car at home, you'll need to find EV stations while on the road. Make sure to plan your route and locate charging stations along the way. Keep in mind that public charging stations typically offer Level 2 charging, but some may have DC fast charging available for quicker charging.

While EVs save on gas expenses, they do require electricity. The average price of electricity in the US as of January 2023 was 16.32 cents per kilowatt-hour. Charging at home is usually cheaper because electricity usage is lower overnight. However, some public charging stations may have additional fees.

Cold weather can affect the range of an EV. ConsumerReports tests have shown that an EV's range can drop by 25% in cold weather when traveling at 70 mph. Short trips with frequent stops and reheating of the EV's cabin can reduce the range by up to 50%. It's important to consider this when planning your EV usage in colder climates.

Tire replacement is more frequent with EVs compared to gas-powered cars. Hyundai states that EV tires wear 20% faster due to the acceleration of electric vehicles, which generates strong instantaneous power.

The lifespan of EVs is still unclear. While gas-powered cars can last up to 300,000 miles with regular maintenance, the longevity of EVs is not yet fully understood. Some research suggests that EVs may not last as long as alternative options.

There may be potential tax credits available for purchasing an EV. According to the IRS, you may qualify for a credit of up to $7,500 under IRS 30D if you buy a new, qualified plug-in EV or fuel cell electric vehicle (FCV). To qualify for the tax credit, you must buy the EV for personal use, primarily use it in the US, and meet certain income requirements.
