An inquiry has been launched by the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee to help the UK Government understand how the country will achieve net zero emissions. The focus of the inquiry will be on the barriers to decarbonizing cars and vans, particularly passenger cars.

Baroness Kate Parminter, the chair of the committee, emphasized the importance of individual actions in reaching net zero. She stated that using electric vehicles for passenger transport will be a crucial part of this effort. The Government has already committed to ending the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030.

The committee will examine the Government's approach to achieving the phase-out dates of 2030 and 2035, as well as the infrastructure and charging issues at both national and regional levels.

Baroness Parminter expressed the committee's desire to hear from the public about their experiences with acquiring and using electric vehicles in the UK, as well as the barriers they face. The committee also wants input from industry, local authorities, and other stakeholders on what the Government can do to encourage greater adoption of electric vehicles before the 2030 and 2035 targets.
