EV inquiry

An inquiry has been launched by the House of Lords Environment and Climate Change Committee to gain a better understanding of how the UK can achieve net zero through the use of electric vehicles (EVs). The committee will specifically focus on the barriers to decarbonizing cars and vans, with an emphasis on passenger cars.

Committee chair Baroness Kate Parminter stated that individuals making changes to their lives, including how they travel and what they buy, are crucial in reaching net zero. She also highlighted the government's commitment to end the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and vans by 2030, making the use of EVs for passenger transport an important part of the plan.

The committee will examine the government's approach to achieving the phase-out dates of 2030 and 2035, as well as the infrastructure and charging issues at both national and regional levels. Baroness Parminter expressed the committee's interest in hearing from the public about their experiences with acquiring and using EVs in the UK, as well as the barriers they face. The committee also seeks input from industry, local authorities, and other stakeholders involved in decarbonizing transport, to determine what actions the government needs to take to encourage greater adoption of EVs before the 2030 and 2035 targets are reached.
