Fastenings' timely solution for London EV Company

The iconic London black cab, known worldwide, is undergoing a transformation into a zero carbon mobility technology company. TR Fastenings is proud to be a part of this journey, assisting in the evolution of production for a greener future.

The demand for electric vehicles has been rapidly increasing globally, putting pressure on the traditional automotive supply chain. This has prompted providers to find new ways of working and be more dedicated than ever to meeting the changing needs of their customers. TR was approached by the London EV Company (LEVC) with a time-sensitive issue, highlighting this trend.

LEVC, a part of the Geely Holding Group, is on an ambitious journey with its innovative electric TX taxi. Operating in a just-in-time environment, LEVC required a reliable automotive components provider that could offer a consistent and seamless service. When this was no longer possible, LEVC had to find a new provider to keep production moving. The company needed to enhance and secure its supply chain, adapt to operational changes, and focus on technical and engineering support, along with a robust logistics service.

During this transition period, TR and LEVC had the opportunity to review each part together. They rationalized the number of parts used, types of fasteners, and eliminated bespoke special parts where possible. TR was chosen as the supplier of choice due to its extensive experience in designing and manufacturing fasteners for automotive applications. TR also supplies other companies within the Geely Holding Group, including Proton in Malaysia, Lotus cars in the UK, and major Tier 1 suppliers for Volvo.

As a global fastener specialist, TR's design and engineering teams were involved from the beginning. An internal review was conducted to understand LEVC's specific needs, and project teams from both TR and LEVC were assigned to work together. It was crucial to have a constant on-site presence at LEVC to instill confidence and work within a tight timeline.

TR quickly established a stable full-service provision for LEVC, which was especially important for a new product launch. TR now provides approximately 350 components used in the vehicles and supplies Tier 1 suppliers with components for the drive train, brakes, lighting clusters, car seats, IP console, and battery pack.

Dan Pereira, Engineering Manager, UK & Ireland, TR Fastenings, said: "This challenging project required quick action to understand the customer's needs and implement an effective system. We understand the pressures faced by automotive manufacturers, and this project exemplifies how TR Fastenings can rise to any situation, working closely with the client to provide the support they need. It demonstrates our commitment to meeting the needs of our customers, regardless of the size or complexity of their operation."

LEVC needed rapid support to meet demand, and TR stepped in, providing additional on-site customer support. They reviewed stock quantities to identify any gaps in the system, established working relationships, collaborated with engineers to understand their needs, and ensured a seamless transition. TR shared data sheets with engineers and purchasing, agreeing on specifications and expediting the production process and gaining PPAP approvals. TR was also asked to manage other bespoke parts on behalf of LEVC, which were added to the bill of materials. Critical stock supply resumed, and production continued without disruption.

TR's complete, full-service approach prevented manufacturing disruptions and established a lasting relationship with a new customer. To celebrate a successful transition, TR proudly showcased the electric TX taxi at the recent Automechanika Show in Birmingham, generating significant interest from attendees over the three-day event.

Sven Brehler, Global Director of Engineering at TR Fastenings, said: "The TX taxi sparked conversations about our capabilities and extensive product range. As the EV market continues to grow, TR is well-positioned to lead in fastening solutions for this sector."

TR is at the forefront of design engineering and manufacturing, offering over 55,000 products across its portfolio. With facilities in 18 countries and 7 manufacturing sites, TR supplies components to more than 5,000 companies globally across various industries.
