Ford Transit Custom Nugget debut

Ford has introduced a new campervan, the Transit Custom Nugget, which features several upgrades compared to its predecessor. The new layout includes a drawer fridge, induction hob, and a sink with hot water as standard. This design change has resulted in 20% more countertop space and improved refinement with the addition of soft-close cabinets to reduce noise.

In collaboration with Westfalia, the Transit Custom Nugget has a redesigned interior that prioritizes the needs of campers. The cabin is entirely modular and features a new L-shaped layout, allowing occupants to move freely and access cooking, seating, and sleeping areas.

The exterior of the Transit Custom Nugget has also undergone a sleeker redesign. It now has thinner headlights, a new grille with a light bar running across the top, and smaller tail lights at the rear.

Based on the Transit Custom van platform, the Ford Transit Custom Nugget offers the option of a plug-in hybrid powertrain, keeping up with its rival, the Volkswagen California. The front seats can swivel around to face the rear when parked, maximizing interior space. Additionally, a second row of seats provides accommodation for three more occupants during travel.

The cabin of the Transit Custom Nugget features two double bed spaces. One is created by folding down the rear seating area, while the other is accessible by popping up the Dormer roof. The roof section's mattress can be folded to increase headroom over the kitchen area when necessary. An optional solar panel on the roof helps charge the battery when off-grid.

Adding to the camping experience, the Transit Custom Nugget includes high-tech features such as a 5G modem for WiFi access and a seven-inch infotainment touchscreen that controls ambient lighting, onboard heating, and provides information on water and battery levels.

The powertrain options for the Transit Custom Nugget include a 2.0-litre EcoBlue turbocharged diesel engine with 168bhp and an eight-speed automatic gearbox, available in front or all-wheel drive. Additionally, a plug-in hybrid option is available, combining a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine, an electric motor, and an 11.8kWh battery. Performance figures for the plug-in hybrid version are yet to be confirmed.

Ford has enhanced the Transit Custom's chassis with independent rear suspension, offering a more car-like driving experience. The all-wheel drive option makes the Transit Custom Nugget more capable in light off-roading conditions. Driver assistance features include active cruise control and a 360-degree camera for improved visibility during parking.

The diesel version of the Ford Transit Custom Nugget will be available for sale in Autumn 2023, with deliveries expected in spring 2024. The plug-in hybrid model will be released 12 months later. Pricing details have not been announced yet, but the entry-level diesel models are estimated to start from over £60,000.
