GM cuts 200 engineering jobs

General Motors (GM) has announced plans to eliminate approximately 200 engineering positions within the company. However, GM has assured employees in these roles that they will be given the opportunity to transition to other jobs within the organization.

A spokesperson for GM stated that the automaker is taking measures to rebalance its engineering resources in order to align better with its growth strategy. As a result, a small number of engineers will be required to move to different parts of the organization over the next few months. GM has committed to working with those affected and providing them with the chance to apply for open positions.

In July, GM CEO Mary Barra revealed the company's new strategy, "Winning with Simplicity," during the second-quarter earnings call. This strategy aims to reduce design and engineering costs and simplify vehicle orders and manufacturing processes. As part of this strategy, GM plans to cut trim levels in half, resulting in fewer part numbers. The goal is to streamline marketing, engineering, and manufacturing efforts while still delivering the best features that customers desire, according to Barra.
