GM introduces affordable Baojun electric vehicle in China

General Motors' joint venture in China, SGMW, has introduced the Baojun Cloud electric hatchback to the Chinese market. The vehicle is priced at 95,800 yuan ($13.2K) and is available in four versions.

SGMW, which is a collaboration between General Motors, SAIC, and Wuling Motors, sells vehicles under the Wuling and Baojun brand names. In 2020, they launched the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV, an affordable microcar that quickly surpassed Tesla's Model 3 sales in the region.

The success of the Mini EV led to the introduction of several variations, including a convertible model and the Wuling Air EV, which is also known as the MG Comet in India. SGMW has continued to build on this success with the release of the Baojun Yep, an exciting electric vehicle that resembles a mini Ford Bronco.

Earlier this year, SGMW launched the Wuling Bingo, a sub-$10,000 electric vehicle that achieved impressive sales figures in its first month on the market. The joint venture has now unveiled the Baojun Cloud EV, further expanding its electric vehicle lineup.

The Baojun Cloud is a compact electric hatchback that comes in four versions, with prices ranging from 95,800 yuan to 123,800 yuan ($17.1K). It measures 4,295 mm in length, 1,850 mm in width, and 1,652 mm in height, making it a direct competitor to the BYD Dolphin and Volkswagen ID.3.

Unlike its competitors, the Baojun Cloud offers two battery options: 37.9 kWh and 50.6 kWh. These provide a cruising range of 360 km (223 mi) and 460 km (285 mi) respectively. The interior of the vehicle features an 8.8-inch full LCD instrument screen and a central control screen that comes in either 10.1-inch or 15.6-inch sizes. Additionally, the Baojun Cloud EV is equipped with LingOS 2.0, an innovative ecological cockpit system.

In response to China's competitive EV market, Volkswagen recently reduced prices for its ID.3 electric car. This move has proven successful, with SAIC-VW reporting a sales increase of over 300% for the ID.3 last month.
