GM's New 'Plug And Charge' Feature Will Simplify the Charging Process For its Current & Future EVs

General Motors is offering a new "Plug and Charge" feature for its current and upcoming electric vehicle portfolio. The Detroit-based automaker recently announced the expansion of its partnership with EV charging provider EVgo as part of rollout of its Ultium Charge 360 ecosystem.

Since the vehicle begins charging as soon as it's plugged in, the new plug and charge feature also makes it super easy for customers to start the actual charging process. 

In order to simplify the charging experience for electric vehicle owners, dealers, and fleets, GM is investing heavily in developing its charging infrastructure to integrate with GM vehicle mobile apps, charging networks, and other services and products. 

It's worth noting that GM is the first legacy car manufacturer to introduce the Plug and Charge feature, which has been developed to be compatible with multiple EV charging network providers throughout the country.  GM claims that it is the only automaker to offer a plug and charge feature that works with the automaker's existing and upcoming EV offerings.

The Cadillac Lyriq, GMC Hummer EV pickup, and Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV with DC fast charging capability can use GM's new plug and charge feature. Customers with EVgo accounts will need to configure and activate the plug and charge features on their GM vehicles.

In order to use the plug and charge feature, GM customers must have an active OnStar connected services account. Drivers can use the GM brand app to perform the activation, and no further steps are required to access the feature. 

GM customers currently can use the service at EVgo DC fast-charging stations. Currently, over 100,000 charging points across the United States and Canada are available under the Ultium Charge 360 Network.  

The automaker says that the new system will be available soon on all public chargers within the Ultium Charge 360 Network. Through its collaboration with EVgo, GM will install over 3,250 fast chargers across the country by 2025.

GM will also install 40,000 level 2 AC charger points with the support of its dealers across the US and Canada in local communities. The automaker aims to promote easy charging access and education with its EVgo collaboration.

In 2021, General Motors expanded its Ultium Charge 360  network by partnering with several new operators, including, NoodoeEV, EVCS, EVPassport, and EVGateway.

GM is fast advancing its electrification plans. The company recently announced it will invest $81 million to hand-build the Cadillac Celestiq in Michigan.
