Heatwave possible as autumn starts

The UK could experience its hottest day of the year so far by the middle of the week, according to the Met Office. Despite it being the first week of autumn, sunshine and scorching temperatures are expected after a wet summer.

The meteorological weather service has predicted a heatwave starting from Monday, coinciding with the start of the new school term. Temperatures could reach the 30s, similar to those seen in July.

The Met Office's latest forecast suggests that the first full week of September is likely to see a heatwave in some parts of the UK. Meteorologist Jonathan Vautrey has hinted that temperatures of 29C and possibly even 30C are possible.

High pressure is expected to dominate the weather over the weekend and into the new working week, bringing warm conditions across the country. Wednesday has been highlighted as a potential record-breaking day, with temperatures reaching 32C, surpassing the previous high of 32.2C set in June.

The Met Office has forecasted temperatures between 28C and 29C for London, while Birmingham, Manchester, and Newcastle are also expected to see sunshine and temperatures ranging from 19C to 27C throughout the week. Cardiff in Wales could experience highs of 24C to 28C, and Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen, could see temperatures ranging from 19C to 25C. Belfast in Northern Ireland is forecasted to have temperatures around 22C to 23C.

These hot conditions come after a summer of heavy rainfall, with July being the sixth wettest on record in the UK. Northern Ireland also broke its record for rainfall in the month, with an average of 150.5mm compared to the usual 82mm.
