High-Risk Vehicle Ownership and Car Theft Fears

Car theft is a fear that many drivers have, but not all vehicles have the same risk of being stolen. According to a recent report from the Highway Loss Data Institute, the Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is the car that is stolen the most compared to other vehicles. Drivers of this vehicle report 60 times more thefts than the average for all passenger vehicles.

Another Dodge model, the Charger HEMI, also has a high risk of theft, with a claim frequency 20 times higher than average. The report highlights that both the Charger and Challenger models have consistently been among the top five most stolen vehicles since 2011.

The situation has worsened in recent years. From 2019 to 2021, Hellcat models had 18 vehicle thefts per 1,000 vehicles. However, in the 2020-2022 models, this number increased to 25 thefts per 1,000 vehicles. To put this into perspective, the most stolen vehicle from the 2017-2019 models, the Infiniti Q60, only had two thefts per 1,000 vehicles.

HLDI Senior Vice President Matt Moore expressed his shock at these numbers and advised Hellcat owners to be cautious. Interestingly, both the HEMI and Hellcat engines come with the Deluxe Security Alarm upgrade as a standard feature, making the high theft rates even more surprising.
