Honda Civic Type R-GT Concept previews brand's new Super GT500 racer for 2024 season

The Honda Civic Type R-GT Concept is a race car that was first introduced at the Tokyo Auto Salon in January and later showcased at the Japan Mobility Show. This concept car serves as a preview for Honda's upcoming replacement for the NSX-GT in the GT500 category of the Super GT championship.

Although it may bear some resemblance to the FL5 Civic Type R, the GT500 racer is quite different from the road-going production version. It adheres to the regulations set by Super GT, featuring a custom carbon monocoque chassis and a rear-wheel drive layout.

Honda Racing Corporation (HRC) has confirmed that the racer will be equipped with a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, expected to produce up to 650 horsepower, which is typical for the GT500 class. Additionally, cars in this category are allowed to have more aerodynamic features compared to the lower GT300 class.

The final version of the race car, known as the Civic Type R-GT, has already undergone its initial shakedown test in July. The provisional calendar for the 2024 Super GT season was announced in August, with the first race scheduled to take place at the Okayama International Circuit in April of next year.
