Honda CR-V e:PHEV - electrifying review

Now in its sixth incarnation, the Honda CR-V continues to embody the dependable charm that made it a popular choice in the United States. While its conservative design may not be groundbreaking, the CR-V offers a dependable hybrid setup, similar to the latest Honda Civic. However, it is the plug-in CR-V e:PHEV that shows the most promise.

In a time of volatile fuel prices and a struggling economy, many people are seeking value for their money when it comes to their vehicles. The CR-V e:PHEV offers the promise of 51 miles of electric-only driving, making it suitable for trips to the town center or quiet school runs.

The exterior of the new Honda CR-V may not be revolutionary, but it features the standard and familiar SUV shape. The width has been increased by 10 millimeters, the length by 80 millimeters, and the wheelbase extended by 40 millimeters compared to its predecessor. All models come with stylish 18-inch alloys that enhance the overall look of the car. Despite its size, the CR-V e:PHEV manages to avoid feeling bulky.

The front end of the CR-V shares design elements with other new Honda models, including sleek LED headlights. The interior is sensible and carries over the successful trim themes from the latest Honda Civic. The CR-V is well-appointed, and the build quality is evident in every detail.

The latest CR-V is available in two hybrid versions and the e:PHEV plug-in model. The e:PHEV features a 17.7kWh battery and a 2-liter engine that complements the size of the car. It offers the benefit of electric-only driving at the start, with the ability to travel up to 51 miles on electric power when needed. The CR-V e:PHEV also dynamically manages power between the petrol engine and the battery.

While the CR-V e:PHEV is quiet and agile in urban areas, it requires more effort to get the best performance from the petrol-powered part of the package on the motorway. Sport mode is recommended for a livelier experience. Despite its size, the CR-V handles corners well with minimal roll.

The interior of the CR-V e:PHEV is equipped with sufficient technology to meet needs without overwhelming the driver. The 10.2-inch TFT screen in front of the steering wheel is well-executed, although some driver safety notifications and graphics can be bothersome. The blindspot camera on the central 9-inch touchscreen can be distracting, but it can be turned off. The e:PHEV also features Honda's Digital Key, allowing key operations through a dedicated app.

LED lighting is a pleasing addition to the interior, creating a pleasant ambiance in common areas such as the center console and footwells. Honda strikes a good balance between incorporating technology and retaining physical controls for climate settings.

As a family-focused SUV, the Honda CR-V is suitable for longer journeys, offering a range of approximately 500 miles with optimal performance from the petrol and battery combination. The spacious boot can hold up to 586 liters of cargo, thanks to the integrated battery. The CR-V also performs well on shorter trips, taking advantage of its electric-only capability.

The main drawback of the PHEV Honda CR-V is its high price. While it offers an impressive range of features and excellent build quality, some customers may opt for the more affordable hybrid option or consider other alternatives such as the Toyota bZ4X. However, for existing CR-V enthusiasts with the financial means, the smooth and comfortable CR-V will be a perfect upgrade.

Overall, the plug-in version of the Honda CR-V is a success, despite its large size and price tag. It offers a reliable and efficient driving experience.
