Honda unveils debut electric bike
【Summary】Honda has unveiled its first electric bicycle, the Honda e-MTB Concept, at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo. The e-bike has a realistic design and uses existing e-bike components, allowing Honda to focus on aesthetics and structural design. It features a full-suspension design, with components from well-known brands such as SRAM, Shimano, Fox, and Maxxis.
Honda is joining other major automotive manufacturers in debuting its first electric bicycle, the Honda e-MTB Concept. The bike was showcased at the Japan Mobility Show in Tokyo, alongside other futuristic debuts from Japanese motorcycle companies and automakers.
The Honda e-MTB Concept stands out with its realistic design, resembling a downhill electric bike. Unlike some far-fetched e-bike concepts, Honda's design appears to be production-ready. This trend suggests that these concepts could potentially be manufactured in the future.
Instead of reinventing the wheel, Honda opted to use an existing Brose mid-drive motor for the e-bike. By leveraging established e-bike components, Honda could focus on the overall appearance and structural design, relying on companies with decades of experience in bike parts production.
The full-suspension e-bike features a SRAM Eagle AXS drivetrain, Shimano hydraulic disc brakes, Fox suspension, a RockShox Reverb dropper seat post, DT Swiss XM 1700 wheels, and Maxxis Minion DHF tires.
Honda aimed to create a product that combines the experiences of motorcycles and bicycles, capable of tackling mountainous terrain. According to the company, the Honda e-MTB Concept expands the possibilities of mobility in nature, offering an enjoyable riding experience for mountain trails with electric assistance.
While Honda is not the first automaker or motorcycle manufacturer to venture into electric bicycles, other notable players include Harley-Davidson, Porsche, Peugeot, GM, HUMMER, and Jeep. These companies recognize the growing e-bike market as a lucrative opportunity to expand their brands and attract more people into their transportation ecosystem.
