The Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) is calling on the government to consider several factors as it conducts a new inquiry into the electric vehicle (EV) experience. The inquiry aims to gather industry and customer feedback on the challenges faced with EVs, as the government evaluates the feasibility of its 2030 ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel vehicles.

The IMI fully supports the UK government's ambition to transition to zero-emission vehicles and believes that this inquiry, which focuses on understanding the barriers, costs, and benefits of transitioning by the 2030 and 2035 phase-out dates, is both timely and essential. The IMI is particularly pleased that the Environment and Climate Change Committee, led by Baroness Parminter, recognizes the importance of seeking input from the automotive sector and motorists. With their unique insights across the industry, the IMI is committed to contributing to the inquiry and working alongside the government, its members, and the wider industry to achieve a seamless transition to electric vehicles.

Hayley Pells, the policy and public affairs lead at the IMI, emphasizes the importance of incentivizing a robust UK EV market. While the phase-out dates may be aggressive, they are achievable with a collective effort, industry partnerships, and clear policy guidelines. Pells suggests that developing a clear roadmap with key dates and timelines will help all stakeholders prepare for the transition.

Pells also urges the government to consider solutions for battery disposal and recycling. She highlights the need to account for the entire lifecycle of EVs when assessing sustainability.
